Understanding ISEE Testing Seasons
The ISEE is offered during three testing seasons each year. Unlike the SSAT, which allows multiple attempts, the ISEE only allows one test per testing season — so choosing the right season matters.
| Season | Months | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Fall | August – November | Early-decision applicants |
| Winter | December – March | Most applicants (peak season) |
| Spring/Summer | April – July | Students retesting or applying late |
Most private school application deadlines fall in January or February, which means the fall or early winter testing windows are the most popular.
When to Start Preparing
Your prep timeline should work backward from your chosen test date:
- 6+ months before: Take a diagnostic test to find strengths and weaknesses
- 3–6 months before: Focused practice on weak areas, vocabulary building, timed drills
- 1–3 months before: Full-length practice tests, pacing strategies, review mistakes
- Final week: Light review, logistics prep, rest
If your target schools have January deadlines, a November or December test date gives time for score reports to arrive. Score reports are typically available online within 7–10 business days.
Fall vs. Winter: Which Season?
Fall testing (August–November) is ideal if your child:
- Is already scoring well in practice and just needs to formalize the result
- Wants extra time in case a retest is needed in the winter season
- Is applying to schools with early notification programs
Winter testing (December–March) works better if your child:
- Needs more preparation time
- Is in 8th grade and can benefit from the first few months of new coursework
- Is applying to schools with standard January/February deadlines
Taking the fall ISEE as a "practice run" is a real strategy, but only if your target schools accept scores from both seasons. Check each school's policy before planning this approach.
How to Register
Registration is done through the ERB website. Key steps:
- Create an ERB family account
- Choose a testing location (school-based or Prometric center)
- Select your preferred test date
- Pay the registration fee (currently around $130–$160)
Registration often fills up, especially for popular testing locations. Register at least 4–6 weeks before your preferred date.
Test Day Logistics
On test day, your child will need:
- Two #2 pencils (for paper-based testing; some locations offer computer-based testing)
- A valid photo ID (school ID works for most locations)
- A snack and water for the break
- No calculators, phones, or smartwatches
The test takes about 2 hours and 50 minutes including the essay. Plan for roughly 3.5 hours total with check-in and breaks.
What If My Child Needs to Retest?
Since the ISEE allows one test per season, retesting means waiting for the next season. If your child tests in the fall and wants to try again, the next opportunity is the winter season.
Before retesting, use the intervening weeks productively:
- Review the score report to identify weak sections
- Focus practice on the lowest-scoring areas using section-specific practice
- Take at least 2–3 full-length practice tests under timed conditions
Most students see meaningful improvement with 6–8 weeks of focused preparation between attempts. For a detailed timeline, see our complete preparation guide.
